Choir at St. James the Less

The Choir singing an anthem during the 2005 Festival of Lessons & Carols

Rehearsals
The Choir meets every Thursday for rehearsal from 7:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. in the music room on the lower level. All are welcome to join this group - you don't have to be able to read music! The choir sings weekly at the 10 o'clock service from September to June.

Repertoire
We sing a range of repertoire, ranging from Pergolesi and Tallis to Bach, Fauré and Mozart. We also sing some contemporary selections by composers such as Hogan, Cherwein and Schram. The Choir regularly sings the Offertory anthem at the 10 a.m. Sunday service, and occasionally we sing a Communion anthem as well.

About us
At St. James the Less, we offer a number of "special" services throughout the year, lead by the Choir, which give our parish the chance to experience different styles of worship.

During Holy Week, the Good Friday Service takes the form of Taizé prayer and song.

The season of Advent welcomes our Celtic Service - with songs from the Ionian tradition and Celtic instruments, played by volunteer musicians from the church.

One of the music department's biggest services in terms of preparation and amount of music is Lessons and Carols. Each year, a different approach is taken to this service, utilizing the Choir and Bell Choir along with guest musicians from the community. This wonderful, candlelight service is an amazing way to reflect on the season of Advent and to prepare for the joyous Christmas celebrations to come.

On Christmas Eve, the Choir leads the 10:00 p.m. service in holy carols and hymns of the season.

The Choir is made up primarily of volunteers from our parish. On average, we have 15-20 musicians in the loft. Due to our significant 'snow-bird' population, we do see some fluctuation throughout the year.

St. James the Less employs 4 section leaders, who perform various solo and small ensemble anthems and oratorio arias throughout the year. The quartet allows for smaller group participation in some services, as well as variety in repertoire. As section leaders, they attend all rehearsals and services, and they offer their musical knowledge to their sections in any way they can.
