Christian Education

Children’s Programming

St. James the Less holds Sunday school classes for children aged three to 17 years old. Nursery care is provided for children less than three years of age. Classes kick off each fall with an ice cream social on the Sunday after Labor Day, and conclude with a Parish picnic the first Sunday in June. Each year we have approximately 32 teaching Sundays. Classes begin promply at at 9:15 am and end at 10:00 am when the children are joined with the congregation for the 10 o'clock service. This year we have 39 children participating in the church school program. Our program includes different curricula for each age group.

Children’s Chapel

Our youngest members meet in our Chapel on the lower level. There are a size appropriate altar and candles to experience a service. The curriculum used is Dr. Jerome Berryman’s “Godly Play.”  Small props, music, dance and exercise are all used to help the children understand the bible stories.

JesusQuest

Our children in 2nd through 6th grade follow a rotational model curriculum by Leader Resources. Each unit is based on a particular story. For a six to eight week period children participate in different workshops related to the story. Workshops in each unit consist of art, computer, drama, games and stories, kitchen, music and movies.

Confirmation

The confirmation experience for our children consists of two parts:
  •  Part One: Children attend a one year class entitled “We R Episcopalians.”  Instruction in the Sacraments, the symbolism of the church, worship, and church history are all included in this class, which sets the stage for Part Two.
  • Part Two: The children now spend two years in the confirmation room using the Bible based “Crossings” curriculum.  One year is spent with the Old Testament and one year with the New Testament.  At the end of their studies students     are given the opportunity to be confirmed at the deanery confirmation in May.

High School

After confirmation, children attend a discussion-based class that centers on the sermon of the previous week.  This class is led by young adults, and it is understood that nothing said will go outside the classroom.

We have had a Youth Minister and Youth Group program, but due to changes in leadership and participation, the youth group currently meets on an ad hoc basis.

Youth Trips

Currently, no youth trips are scheduled.

Adult Education

Our adult education program is focused on seasonal and topical themes.  We meet after 8 AM service around 8:45, during coffee hour, before the 10 AM service.
