I must have listened to Miles Davis recording, Some Kind of Blue, a million times. It feels like the perfect jazz album. The musicality and emotion pulls me up and out of my self-occupation. I discovered Miles was a great philosopher too, he wrote, “Man, sometimes it takes you a long time to sound like yourself.” ― Miles Davis So true. In music as in life we play a lot of notes to find the ones that are authentically ours. There is a genuine sound of you that God wants to be broadcast.
Jesus set the theme of Advent when he warned the disciples to, “Keep awake.” Advent is a time of preparation authentic opening up to God’s life coming into being through our lives. Authentic faith is a work in progress. I wonder what the idea of waking up means for you - in your skin- how are you spiritually asleep at the wheel? I love Mile’s quote that it takes “a long time to sound like yourself.” We have a lot of time. Take a moment to reflect on how you are doing spiritually. What is Jesus inviting you toward? What has Jesus been saying is yours to do and say that you have neglected? Entering Advent is not just about being in the time before Christmas, it is a spiritual time to learn more what it sounds like to be the beloved child of God that you are. With you on the journey Lisa
